Born in Kealakekua, Hawaii, Ellison Onizuka was an American astronaut, engineer, and U.S. Air Force flight test engineer. He made history as the first Asian American and the first person of Japanese ancestry to travel into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-51-C). His life was tragically cut short during the Challenger disaster (STS-51-L), but his legacy as a pioneer and role model endures.

Katherine Cheung was a pioneering Chinese aviator and one of the first Chinese women to earn a private pilot's license in the United States. She later became the first Chinese woman to hold an international flying license. After earning her wings, Cheung became a U.S. citizen and dedicated her life to advancing women in aviation.

Hazel Ying Lee served as a pilot in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II. As one of the first Chinese American women to fly for the U.S. military, Lee broke barriers and championed inclusion and equity. In 2004, she was posthumously inducted into Oregon’s Aviation Hall of Honor in recognition of her bravery and service.

Sunita Williams is a trailblazing American astronaut and retired U.S. Navy officer. A veteran of multiple space missions—including Expeditions 14, 15, 32, and 33—she is one of NASA’s most experienced astronauts. In 2024, she became the first woman to fly a flight test of an orbital spacecraft as part of the Boeing Crew Flight Test. With nine spacewalks totaling over 62 hours, Williams holds the record for the most spacewalk time by a woman.
