Don't let your flight become a lost connection

  1. Don't let your flight become a lost connection

Talking Points

  • Any time the operational controls at Reagan National are modified by Congress, it forces airlines to reassess routes served at both airports.
  • Our airport and the local communities served are at risk of losing nonstop flights to Reagan National and or Dulles International.
  • The threat comes from efforts by Members of Congress and their attempts to change the slot and perimeter statues/regulations governing operations at Reagan National Airport.
  • Reagan National Airport is governed by statutory controls that limit the number of slots, or takeoff and landing operations, and a perimeter that establishes the distance an aircraft is permitted to travel as either an origin or destination.

Amendments

  • Rep. Cuellar amendment 147 to the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 (H.R. 4) reassigns two inside-the-perimeter slots to serve outside-the-perimeter flights.
    • While the amendment is seemingly designed to limit its impact to large hub airports inside the perimeter, the proposed changes could lead to a bait and switch. Nothing in this amendment or current law prevents an airline from using large hub slots to start this service and then backfilling those large hub slots with others serving small and medium hub airports. The net result is that our community, regardless of size, could lose service.
