The Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 and is a group of museums and research centers administered by the U.S. Government. It is termed "the nation’s attic" for its eclectic holdings of 137 million items and has 19 museums, 9 research centers, and zoo, the majority of which are located in Washington, D.C. Visitors to the museums are admitted without charge as funding comes from the Institution’s own endowment, private and corporate contributions, membership dues, government support, and retail, concession and licensing revenues.
